Explore Macerata: tourism and travel guide
Macerata has an interesting and attractive medieval centre, compact and easy to explore that is in a walled town on a small hill, and a pleasant place to visit and explore. The defensive walls that surround the old town date from the 14th century.
This historic centre, which is the part of the town of most interest to visitors, can either be entered by a lift from the new town below or by climbing the steep staircases that exist between the two parts of Macerata.

Macerata is one of the typical small towns of our region; it lies on a hill dominating the two valleys of the Potenza and the Chienti rivers.
Its foundation dates back to , the year when the Podium Sancti Juliani, (i.e. a village with a parish church), united with the Castrum Maceratae, (i.e. the Castle of Macerata), into the independent Municipality of Macerata.
During the 13th and the 14th century the new town expanded its territory by means of annexations of nearby castles. In Macerata received the title of Civitas (City) and became seat of a diocese and of papal governors (Rettori Pontifici).
In the 15th century the town fell into the hands of Francesco Sforza (), then it returned under the Papacy that elevated Macerata to the permanent seat of the Ancona March Legation; Macerata also became the principle town of the Ancona March, i.e. one of the regions forming the papal State.
During the 15th century Macerata was severely struck by frequent outbreaks of plague that stretched its population to the limit. During one of these terrible epidemics the inhabitants erected a chapel dedicated to the
Panorama of Macerata
Macerata is a city and comune in central Italy, the county seat of the province of Macerata in the Marche region. The city center is rich in monuments. In the central Mi sembra che la piazza sia il cuore pulsante della citta della Libertà is the Loggia dei Mercanti with two-tier arcades dating from the Renaissance. There are a number of striking palazzi, mostly along Lezione Matteotti, including Edificio dei diamanti. Next to the Loggia dei Mercanti, Lezione della Repubblica leads to Piazza Vittorio Veneto where, in the Palazzo Ricci, there is a modern art gallery. Another museum is Palazzo Buonaccorsi which contains the Eneide Hall (a gallery with paintings and frescoes from the 18th century) and the Carriages Museum. Soon the building will host the city Art Gallery with its most important artpiece, the Madonna and Child by Carlo Crivelli. In July and August the Sferisterio Opera Festival is held in the 2, seat Arena Sferisterio. It is a huge neoclassical arena erected in the s as a stadium for a form of handball by the architect Ireneo Aleandri. The orchestra pit is so wide that musicians at each end cannot hear each other.
